COBRA KAI Showrunners on Why That Fan-Favorite Karate Kid Character Didn’t Appear, But There's Still Hope
Cobra Kai has never shied away from bringing back legacy characters, digging deep into The Karate Kid's rich history to surprise and delight fans. But as the final episodes unfolded, one major absence stood out… Julie Pierce, who was played by Hilary Swank in The Next Karate Kid.
Showrunner Hayden Schlossberg recently opened up about why Julie never made it into the final episodes, despite the fact that the show has resurrected nearly every other major figure from the franchise. According to him, it wasn’t for a lack of effort.
He explained: “We talk about all possibilities. That’s obviously one of the big legacy characters that didn’t end up in Cobra Kai, and it was something that we talked about.
“It was something that we communicated—the possibilities of her being a part of it. The long story short is it wasn’t going to happen. As writers and creators, there’s no guarantees of anything.”
Fans have long debated whether The Next Karate Kid was even canon, despite Mr. Miyagi himself training Julie in the 1994 film. But with Jackie Chan now confirmed to return as Mr. Han in Karate Kid: Legends alongside Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, speculation grew that Swank’s character might finally make a comeback.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards for Cobra Kai’s farewell. Schlossberg explained that when developing the series, nothing was ever guaranteed, including the return of Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver. They worked with what was possible and built the best story they could.
He continued: “When we entered into Cobra Kai, we weren’t guaranteed that Thomas Ian Griffith was gonna return to acting or anything. So, you hope for things and then you find out what the reality is, and then you make the best story.
“Our hope is that there’s more Karate Kid stories in the future. There’s more opportunities to see Julie Pierce maybe in a different iteration or story. But it wasn’t gonna happen with this season.”
So while Julie Pierce didn’t show up in Cobra Kai, the door isn’t entirely closed on her return.
