Colin Farrell Teases Penguin's History and THE BATMAN Spinoff Series
The Batman director Matt Reeves is building out a whole new universe for the Dark Knight and Gotham City. The first film will introduce the world and the characters that fill it, and from there, we will get a couple of spinoffs that have already been announced, and there are sure to be some film sequels that follow.
One of the spinoffs that we’ll get puts the focus on Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin. That series will pick up with Cobblepot where the film leaves off, and it will continue his story and his rise in the underworld of Gotham.
In a recent interview with CB, Farrell says that he’s learned "bits and pieces" of the larger story that will belong to Cobblepot as his story arc moves beyond the film. He talked about the collaboration that went into developing his character, saying:
"Like this film was, I think all of the actors you know, Zoe, Paul, John, and Jeffrey, Rob, myself it was such a collaborative experience. When films are this size, it's not always as creatively collaborative as Matt [Reeves] allowed this film to be. Matt had very particular ideas of what the world was gonna look like, and the inner life of each character. But he wanted us all to bring our own sense of history, and our own ideas."
Those ideas and history that were brought to The Penquin will be explored much more in the series. Farrell went on to say:
"So far, the experience of maybe bringing Os into a six or eight hour journey is the same, it's really collaborative. The writer, Lauren LeFranc has some extraordinary ideas, and it's just that it's kind of an amazing character to explore, his kind of awkwardness, and his strength, and his villainy, yes, his propensity for violence. But there's also a heartbroken man inside there you know, which just makes it really tasty. I would love to do it. I won't believe it until I'm in the suit, and in Mike Marino's makeup, and I hear action, then I'll believe and see."
There’s no information on when The Penguin series will start production, but it’s definitely being developed. The other series that’s in development is the one that will focus on the Gotham PD.
