It was recently reported that former NFL star Colin Kaepernick has teamed up with filmmaker Ava DuVernay to make a scripted limited series titled Colin in Black & White, which will chronicle "the adolescent life of all-star athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick." The series was ordered as a Netflix original, and will be a six-part look at the athlete’s unique experience.

Now Kaepernick has signed an overall first-look deal with Disney as well, that will begin with a docuseries from ESPN The Undefeated, “which is expanding its portfolio across Disney, to develop stories from the perspective of Black and Brown communities.” The doc will be chronicling Kaepernick’s life: “Using extensive new interviews and never-seen-before archival material that documents his last five years, Kaepernick will tell his story from his perspective.”

Disney says the “partnership will focus on telling scripted and unscripted stories that explore race, social injustice and the quest for equity, and will provide a new platform to showcase the work of Black and Brown directors and producers.”

Kaepernick said of the partnership:

“I am excited to announce this historic partnership with Disney across all of its platforms to elevate Black and Brown directors, creators, storytellers, and producers, and to inspire the youth with compelling and authentic perspectives. I look forward to sharing the docuseries on my life story, in addition to many other culturally impactful projects we are developing.”

I think this is definitely an interesting story to look into. Kaepernick was so vilified over the last several years, yet he was just trying to start a discussion about race in our country that has recently exploded in a much bigger way. It will be interested to hear his thoughts and how he feels about what has happened in the country since he first took a knee on the football field.

Are you interested in either of these projects?
