Back in 2010, developer Jay Pavlina and his team at Exploding Rabbit released a ridiculously fun fan project called Super Mario Bros. Crossover, a game that rebuilt the classic Super Mario Bros. but swapped Mario out for heroes pulled straight from other legendary NES titles.

One of the coolest crossovers in the bunch lets players storm the Mushroom Kingdom as Bill Rizer from Contra, and the result is exactly the kind of chaos you’d hope for.

Instead of carefully hopping across Goombas and Koopas, Rizer storms through the familiar levels unloading machine gun fire like he’s on an alien battlefield.

Watching him blast his way through Mario’s colorful world is hilarious and oddly satisfying. Enjoy!
