Cool Early Character Designs For BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES
In case you didn't know, this week marks the 25th Anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series! I can't believe that it's been that long since this amazing series aired. It's considered by many to be one of the best-animated series of all time, which I won't argue with because it is.
Today we have some really cool early character design work to show you that has surfaced online that was created by artist Kevin Nowlan. He was brought in early in the development process to help craft the look of the series. He worked alongside Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski, and the rest of the team. Looking at this art, it's not hard to see the influence that he had on the series.
The character designs here include Batman, Man-Bat, Joker, Penguin, Killer Croc, Robin, Catwoman, Ridler, Ra's al Ghul, Talia, and Commissioner Gordon. The art comes from 13th Dimension and they interviewed the artist.
Nowlan was basically used to create clean animatable versions of the characters. Then Timm, Radomski and the other artists who worked on the series tweaked the designs to give them that awesome art deco noir aesthetic that we all loved about the show. Nowlan explained he wanted to give as much detail as possible with just a few lines.
Check out the character designs below and as always, hit us up with your thoughts!
