Could George Lucas Be Planning on Directing The Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie for Lucasfilm?
Several months ago, it was reported that George Lucas visited Belfast’s Paint Hall studios to check out the shooting locations for the Obi-Wan Kenobi film that Lucasfilm as been reportedly developing.
We weren’t sure why Lucas would be visiting the shooting location because we all thought that he was done with the Star Wars franchise when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney. There was also another director attached to it at the time.
Well, over the weekend, former UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson gave a speech at the DUP Annual Conference in Belfast and he ended up dropping Lucas’ name as the possible director for the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.
According to The Spectator, Johnson said the the UK has "by far the most dynamic creative culture and media industries." He then went on to ask the question, "Which was the biggest grossing movie last year? Star Wars and where does George Lucas propose to make a follow up about Obi-Wan Kenobi? Northern Ireland."
Of course, a comment like that is going to start generating a lot of buzz! Lucas hasn’t directed a Star Wars film since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Now, Johnson could have just dropped Lucas’s name in a generalized sort of way, but it would be huge if Lucasfilm and Lucas are teaming up for a Ob-Wan Kenobi movie.
You know what? I’d actually really like to see Lucas jump back in the franchise to direct a new film. I’d be really curious to see what he would do with an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film.
Stephan Daldry (Billy Elliot) was previously rumored to be attached to this film, but then it was later reported that he was not involved with it anymore leaving a vacancy for Lucas to fill.
Lucasfilm has yet to officially announce an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, but it’s obviously something that they have been developing.
This is all just speculation based on Lucas’ name being dropped twice for this film project, but what would you think about George Lucas directing an Obi-Wan Kenobi film? Would you like to see him direct another Star Wars movie?
