Could The BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot Actually Be a Sequel To The Original Series

It was recently announced that Joss Whedon and Monica Owusu-Breen were moving forward with a reboot of the classic 90s series Buffy The Vampire Slayer. All that was revealed about the reboot at the time was that it would see a black actress take over the title role, which was previously by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The announcement was met with a lot of resistance and backlash from the fans. After all, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a series that fans loved! It was a great story filled with fun and complicated characters that a lot of people could relate to.

Well, now Owusu-Breen has taken to Twitter to talk about the new series and hints that maybe the series could actually be a sequel continuing the story of the Slayers. She explains:

“For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay.
"There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, GIles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel… They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to."

Instead, she is looking to focus on a new cast of characters, including a new slayer, for today’s complicated time. Here's the full note that she posted:

She's obviously trying to ease the minds of the fans, but I have no idea if it will work. I'm actually more open to the idea of sequel series. While she doesn't come right out and say it will be a sequel story, her vague words hint at that being the case. It would just be a better way to expand on the universe that the original series built up.

Are you more open to a sequel series than a hard reboot?
