Craig Robinson Says He’s Quitting Comedy to Follow His “True Calling” but There's Something More Going On
Craig Robinson, best known for playing the laid-back, keyboard-playing warehouse foreman Darryl Philbin on The Office, made a surprising announcement on Instagram that has fans scratching their heads because he says he’s done with comedy.
“Hey, everybody! Just wanted you to hear it from me: I am quitting comedy,” Robinson said in a video post. “But not for nothing. It’s been an amazing run, and y’all have been amazing and wonderful, but I’m following something bigger. So, thank you so much, I love you and stay tuned.”
In the caption, he added: “Life update: I’m officially quitting comedy to focus on my true calling. Stay tuned. I’m working on something huge.”
That “something huge” might be less of a dramatic life pivot and more of a carefully orchestrated marketing stunt. In addition to the Instagram posts, billboards have popped up across Los Angeles reading “Craig Robinson Is Quitting Comedy,” not exactly the kind of grassroots farewell you’d expect from someone walking away from an entire career.
Then there’s the follow-up post, where he asked fans for small business advice: “Turns out having a dream and building a business with your friends are two VERY different things,” Robinson wrote. “I can’t go into detail just yet, but for real though any help would be huge.”
Whatever’s going on, it feels like there’s a punchline coming, and I’m curious to see what this is all leading up to.
