Crazy New Trailer For Director Paul Verhoeven's Religious Erotic Thriller BENEDETTA
A new trailer has been released for director Paul Verhoeven’s upcoming film Benedetta, which is a religious erotic thriller. For those of you familiar with Verhoeven’s work such as RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Elle, and Showgirls, you know the guy doesn’t shy away from making people feel uncomfortable, and this new film of his is definitely going to make people feel uncomfortable.
The film tells the story of a nun who suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She also ends up having a romantic affair with a fellow nun who is assigned to help her through the visions she’s having. Then, of course, she starts showing signs of stigmata, and Jesus shows up a few times. Here’s the synopsis:
In the late 15th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.
The film is based on the book by Judith C. Brown. The screenwriter of the film, Gerard Soeteman, has distanced himself from the project because he “is very unhappy with the director's emphasis on the sexual aspect of the true life story of a lesbian nun in the Renaissance.”
As you might imagine, some Catholics are protesting the film because of how blasphemous it is.
The movie stars Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia, and Lambert Wilson, and it will be released on December 3, 2021.
