Dacre Montgomery, Diane Lane, Sofia Boutella, and Tim Robbins Team Up for Brad Anderson’s Thriller MORAL CAPACITY

Dacre Montgomery is stepping into some dark territory with his next project. The Stranger Things star, who can also be seen in Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire, will lead the cast of the upcoming psychological thriller Moral Capacity.

He’ll be joined by an impressive lineup that includes Oscar nominee Diane Lane, Oscar winner Tim Robbins, and Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sofia Boutella.

The film will be directed by Brad Anderson, best known for Session 9, The Call and The Machinist. The script comes from novelist Peter Moore Smith, whose previous work includes Raveling and Los Angeles. Moral Capacity is being introduced at TIFF by Highland Film Group.

The story centers on James Fisher (Montgomery), a man whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel when his affair with his business partner Andrea (Boutella) is discovered by her husband Cliff (Robbins).

What follows is a chilling ultimatum. James must commit murder or watch his entire world collapse. Caught in a dangerous game of blackmail and psychological manipulation, he turns to his therapist Dr. Torre (Lane), not realizing that she may be hiding secrets of her own.

Anderson is excited about the project, saying: “Peter’s fantastic script ticks all the boxes for me. The way it combines a character driven study with a paranoid thriller reminds me of what excited me about my films The Machinist, Session 9 and Fractured.

“And with this awesome cast — especially Tim Robbins, whose Jacob’s Ladder inspired my early love of this genre — I know we’re going to be able to deliver a top-notch commercial film.”

Highland Film Group will oversee international sales, with CAA Media Finance managing domestic rights. Production is expected to kick off in the U.K. in early 2026.

Highland CEO Fraser praised the director’s vision, saying: “Brad Anderson delivers a gutsy and unique perspective to his filmmaking and is the ideal director to bring this taught and tense psychological thriller to life.”

COO Perrier added: “We have a fantastic ensemble cast led by the talented Diane Lane, Sofia Boutella, Tim Robbins and Dacre Montgomery, who can next be seen in Gus Van Sant’s highly anticipated Dead Man’s Wire. This film has universal appeal, and we can’t wait to start shooting.”

Producer Amin also expressed confidence in the project: “This is a rare project that is smart and artistic and commercial at the same time. With this director and cast, this film has huge potential. This is exactly what today’s tough market needs.”

I like the films that Brad Anderson makes, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this one turns out!
