Dafne Keen Says Hugh Jackman Was Just as Protective Offscreen as Wolverine Was in LOGAN
Dafne Keen was just a kid when she landed the role of Laura/X-23 alongside Hugh Jackman in 2017’s Logan, and it turns out Wolverine was just as protective of her offscreen as he was in the movie.
During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Keen opened up about her experience working with Jackman and how the actor went out of his way to make sure she felt safe, respected, and comfortable while filming the Marvel movie.
Keen had nothing but great things to say about her onscreen father figure, who apparently made the experience a lot of fun.
At the time, Jackman was preparing for The Greatest Showman, and Keen, who had a background in dance and acrobatics and grew up loving musicals, found herself with the perfect costar. The two would regularly sing and dance together between takes.
“He’s just like the best number one you could ever wish for, and he’s the best onscreen dad,” Keen said.
Of course, Jackman also took his responsibility as the film’s leading man seriously, especially when it came to looking after his young costar. Keen recalled how he made sure she wasn't being overworked, received the encouragement she needed, and actually enjoyed the experience of making the movie.
“He was so incredibly protective,” she recalled. What Keen appreciated most was that Jackman and the rest of the production treated her as a fellow performer rather than just another kid on a movie set.
She was given the same respect as the adults around her while still having the freedom to enjoy being a child. She said: “They were all really good on that set at making me really feel like a grown-up and making me really feel like a respectable artist.”
At the same time, Keen said the cast and crew “allowed her to be a kid and goof around and be silly.”
It's pretty cool hearing how Jackman helped create that kind of environment for Keen, especially considering how demanding and emotionally intense Logan was.
Their father-daughter relationship was one of the strongest parts of the film, and knowing how supportive Jackman was during production makes their performances together even more meaningful.
Logan became Keen's breakout role and helped launch a career that would eventually include His Dark Materials and The Acolyte. She also got the chance to reunite with Jackman when she returned as X-23 in Deadpool & Wolverine.
For fans who loved their chemistry in Logan, it's awesome to hear that the bond between the two actors was just as genuine when the cameras stopped rolling.
