Dakota Johnson Embarks on a Sci-Fi Odyssey in TRUDY BLUE From the Director of LIGHTYEAR

Dakota Johnson is heading into sci-fi territory with Trudy Blue, a grounded futuristic action film that’s generating excitement at the American Film Market. The project marks a creative collaboration between Johnson and Angus MacLane, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Finding Dory and Lightyear.

Written by Evan Twohy, Trudy Blue tells the story of an outlawed android maid who wakes up in a landfill, 2,000 miles from home, and must journey across a strange and changed world to find her way back. It’s described as a near-future sci-fi adventure with a deeply human core, blending emotional storytelling with high-concept world-building.

Johnson’s been on a roll lately, coming off the success of A24’s Materialists opposite Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, which crossed $100 million worldwide.

She also starred in Splitsville from Michael Angelo Covino, another film she produced. Her filmography spans a wide range from Fifty Shades of Grey to The Lost Daughter, Suspiria, The Social Network, Our Friend, and The Peanut Butter Falcon.

Through her company, TeaTime Pictures, Johnson continues to champion distinctive, character-driven projects, having produced and starred in Daddio, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and Am I OK? She’s also set to appear alongside Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett in Verity, the upcoming adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s hit novel directed by Michael Showalter.

For director Angus MacLane, Trudy Blue marks a return to storytelling with emotional scale and imaginative scope. A Pixar veteran, MacLane co-directed the billion-dollar hit Finding Dory and helmed Lightyear.

His creative fingerprints are on some of animation’s biggest titles, including Toy Story 4, Luca, Turning Red, Coco, and Incredibles 2, among others. His work as an animator spans beloved films like Up, Wall-E, Ratatouille, and Finding Nemo.

Writer Evan Twohy made his Sundance debut earlier this year with Bubble and Squeak and is currently developing projects with Laika, Esmail Corp, and MGM.

With its mix of sci-fi world-building, emotional storytelling, and star power, Trudy Blue seems like it could end up being an interesting project to keep an eye on.
