Damon Lindelof on the Challenge of Making a SUPERMAN Movie These Days
Even though Henry Cavill will be reprising his role as Superman in the DC cinematic Universe, Warner Bors. currently does not have any plans for a Man of Steel sequel or a standalone Superman film.
With J.J. Abrams now at Warner Bros. some fans would like to see him make a Superman movie. After all, he did write a Superman film years ago that never ended up being produced. CB recently interviewed Watchmen series creator Damon Lindelof, and they would like to see Abrams team up with him to for a Superman project. The two talents previously worked together on the series Lost.
Lindelof said that we would be flattered to even be considered to work on a Superman film with Abrams, and he also talked about the challenge of making a Superman movie these days saying:
"It's immensely flattering to even be considered for ... I think that obviously he's up there with Batman and the two kind of the big two. It's incredibly daunting. I think the challenge with Superman is always going to be what does Superman mean in the contemporary framework? For a character, for a culture that's basically moved into this sphere of antiheroes, how do you make space for Superman who is sort of the original superhero?"
This is why WB had been planning on pitting Superman against Batman for years. They were looking to do that long before Zack Snyder came on board. Lindelof went on to say:
"But it's interesting that you mentioned J.J. because long before I worked with him on Lost, J.J. actually wrote a Superman script that never got made for a variety of reasons mostly of which I think is like that Wolfgang Petersen was trying to make a Superman Versus Batman movie. They were also trying to do JLA. This was all before Chris Nolan came in and basically took over Batman, et cetera, but it all kind of just got lost in the wash. He's had a long-term obsession with Superman. I guess what I would say is I would love to see a J.J. Superman movie, but I don't have a take on the character that would be better than that."
I just want to see another great Superman movie one day! Whoever they bring in to make that happen, I hope they bring in the right talent who knows what to do with the heroic and inspiring character. More than ever, right now, the world needs a real Superman movie. A film where he actually inspires hope.
