D&D Random Character Feature: Farmur Graybeard the Hill Dwarf Paladin
Welcome to a new feature I decided to try. Every couple of weeks, I will go to D&D Beyond and hit the randomize button to generate a random level 3 character. Then, we’ll see what we get. This week, since I don’t have any content unlocked, we’re limited to the SRD which everyone has access to with a free account.
Our hero today is Farmur Graybeard. He is a Hill Dwarf Paladin with fairly average stats. His Strength (STR) is only a 7 and his Wisdom (WIS) is an 11, but all other stats are 14. This provides a lot of +2 modifiers. With these random stats, I decided to make sure his equipment had the Finesse trait. Then, I found out he had taken the Dueling Fighting Style and I decided that Farmur would wield a scimitar and shield. Yes, I know a rapier does more damage, but who uses a rapier and shield combo?
Farmur’s background was that of a Soldier and for that item, I thought a backstory could be forged with the broken blade. Maybe it’s a reminder of his life as a soldier before he swore an Oath of Devotion. Maybe he wants to fix the blade and make it holy or something. The possibilities are endless. Of course, because he took an Oath of Devotion, he already has Protection from Evil and Good and Sanctuary prepared. This leaves the other three spell slots available for whatever I want.
Now, the nice thing about Paladins and Clerics is that you can prepare different spells after each long rest. To start though, I thought Bless, Divine Favor, and Shield of Faith would be a good first run. This allows for plenty of buffing for myself and my allies and Divine Favor and Shield of Faith are especially nice since they only take a Bonus Action.
Now, Farmur is going to be a tank. Thanks to his chain mail and shield, his AC is 18. That’s pretty good considering he only gets +2 from his DEX. If enemies do end up hitting him, they’ll have a decent amount of health to take down as well since Farmur has 31 HP. My fifth level monk only has 33 for reference.
Do you like Farmur? Do you have a suggestion for what his backstory should be? You can take a deeper look at what Farmur’s setup looks like.
