Dan Aykroyd Joins Netflix’s Animated GHOSTBUSTRS Series

Dan Aykroyd is stepping back into the world he helped create, this time on the animated side.

Aykroyd has officially signed on as an executive producer for the upcoming animated Ghostbusters series being developed by Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. The announcement dropped as part of Netflix’s Annecy lineup, giving fans a fresh reason to keep an eye on the ever-expanding supernatural franchise.

Details about the show are still mostly under wraps, but what we do know is that it’s “based on the beloved Ghostbusters IP” and is set to “debut exclusively on Netflix in 2027.” There’s also an animated movie in development, so it’s clear the studio isn’t messing around when it comes to growing this universe.

Aykroyd previously hinted at what kind of storytelling could be explored, saying there’s an opportunity for the show’s writers to “address some of the issues that we need to heal and move on with our lives.”

That’s an interesting direction for a franchise known for proton packs and slime, suggesting this series might dig a little deeper while still delivering the ghost-hunting fun.

The executive producer team also includes Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Amie Karp. With that mix of creative voices, the show has a solid foundation to do something fun and maybe a little unexpected.

The project first surfaced as part of a larger push to expand the Ghostbusters universe that began over four decades ago with Aykroyd’s original idea. Since then, the franchise has jumped across films, cartoons, comics, and more, and this new animated series next evolution.

Reitman and Kenan are also set to appear at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Netflix is making a big splash this year with its animation slate. Among the projects being highlighted are Ricky GervaisAlley Cats, a new take on One Piece, Taika Waititi’s Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, and Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn.

Speaking of Alley Cats, Netflix also confirmed it will premiere on August 7. The series stars Gervais alongside Diane Morgan and Tom Basden, and follows a chaotic group of stray British cats navigating life from every possible angle.

Netflix has clearly been leaning harder into animation, and Annecy has become a key place for the streamer to show off what’s coming next. With Ghostbusters now part of that lineup, it feels like the franchise is getting a fresh jolt of energy.
