Dan Harmon Explains The Existence of The Crazy RICK AND MORTY Character Mr. Poopybutthole

During the second season of Rick and Morty, in the episode "Total Rickall" a crazy strange new character was introduced when the Smith home invaded by alien parasites implanting false memories of fake characters. It was ridiculously hilarious. Turns out one of these fake characters ended up being real, that character is Mr. Poopybutthole.

How in the world does Mr. Poopybutthole actually exist, besides the fact that this is a crazy strange cartoon series where anything can happen? Well, creator Dan Harmon offers up an insane explanation, saying:

"I'll give you another theory. How about Mr. Poopybutthole -- just as where there's flies, there's spiders -- wherever these parasites start blooming, Mr. Poopybutthole is a different species who is more benign, or more advanced. He subsists on lives like the way that hermit crabs steal other shells. Maybe Mr. Poopybutthole takes advantage of the holes put in your memory and kind of burrows into those pre-existing holes. So he shows up where those parasites are, and he's more of a fourth dimensional phantom species that isn't bound by space, and only appears in concentrations of temporal malfunction or misperception and breakdown. Mr. Poopybutthole is insinuating himself into the universe regardless of timeline. And the same powers that allow him to do that allow him to directly talk with the audience.

Now, just let that explanation of Mr. Poopybutthole sink in. I love the way Dan Harmon thinks! It's these silly bizarre little details and thoughts that go into these characters and this series that make me love Rick and Morty so much.

If there's one show that can actually get away with introducing a character like Mr. Poopybutthole, it's Rick and Morty.

On a side note, I really enjoyed every chance I got to write the name Mr. Poopybutthole in this article because I never get to write the name Mr. Poopybutthole!
