DANGER MOUSE Animated Film in Development at Sony Pictures
Danger Mouse is a classic 1980s animated series that was recently revived with Alexander Armstrong, Kevin Eldon, John Oliver, Lena Headey, and Stephen Fry providing voices for the characters. Now, according to The Tracking Board, Sony Pictures Animation and Studio Canal have started development on a feature film version of the cartoon.
Danger Mouse was a British cartoon about a secret agent mouse. It was one of those series that I wasn't familiar with until I was older. Don't confuse the series with the classic series Mighty Mouse, which is what I grew up watching. Danger Mouse was created by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall, and originally ran from 1981 to 1992.
The show intended to serve as a send-up of more serious British cold war spy fiction, namely James Bond and Danger Man.Danger Mouse, along with his hamster sidekick Ernest Penfold, travels the globe solving mystery, fighting crime, and stopping villains like the mad scientist wolf Doctor Augustus P. Crumhorn III.
According to the site, "sources say that the movie will offer clues to the origins of the world’s greatest secret agent–an agent so secret that his codename has a codename–and who just so happens to be a mouse living underneath MI6 headquarters."
It's not surprising to hear that this series is being adapted for the big screen. It's been a trend in Hollywood for a while to adapt classic cartoon series.
Producers are currently looking for a screenwriter, and they want someone with "a deep familiarity of the character to tackle the script." They say that the ideal choice would be "a screenwriter who can honor the tradition of the franchise, while still updating the character enough to meet the expectations of his newest–and youngest–fans."
