Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park Set to Star in a Heist Film That Has Nods to OCEAN'S 11 and BETTER LUCK TOMORROW
Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park are teaming up for an upcoming heist film project that is being written by Young Il Kim, who recently worked on Showtime’s Billions and also wrote the Black List script Rodham.
All we really know about the plot at this point is that it centers around a reunion of high school friends who come together for a heist. The movie is supposed to be a nod to classic, fun ensemble heist films. Kim says that it “has nods to Ocean’s 11, The Full Monty as well as Better Luck Tomorrow.”
The story came from Kim, Park, and 3AD’s Head of Development John Cheng, and Park and Kim will lead an ensemble cast made up of primarily Asian American actors. Kim added, “It’s a story that kind of highlights community, friendship, unity in a very familiar genre that people I think will enjoy.” He went on to say:
“We love heist movies. We want to be inclusive and we feel like there’s a story here to be told. It’s super exciting… Randall and I have wanted to do something together for a while. This is just a great reason to bring together talented actors who have been friends for a really long time and really have fun on a project that, with any luck, will be able to make an impact.”
Apparently the project was in a heated bidding war with several studios, but Amazon Studios came out on top and acquired it. The bidding war was encouraging for Kim, who said, “There is an appetite to see this kind of a movie with an Asian American cast and that is a really promising sign of the times.”
I’m always up for a fun heist movie, so I’m curious to see what this story this film will tell.
