Daniel Kaluuya Gives Exciting Update on Progress of SPIDER-PUNK Solo Movie
Fans were stoked when it was confirmed back in August that Spider-Punk is getting his own film in Sony’s Spider-Verse. The fan-favorite Spider-Man variant Hobie Brown, who made his big-screen debut in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is voiced by actor Daniel Kaluuya, who now has a big update on the project.
Kaluuya attended Deadline’s Red Sea Studio in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where the Get Out and Black Panther actor teased his upcoming Spider-Punk animated feature in development at Sony.
The actor confirmed that he and co-writer Ajon Singh are in the “finishing stages” of the first draft of the Spider-Punk feature, which builds upon the character we were introduced to in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Kaluuya explained, “We’re in our process.”
When pressed about plot details and whether or not the film was set to be a standalone about Spider-Punk or if other Spider-Verse characters would feature in the film, the Oscar-winning actor smiled and simply said: “TBD.”
Kaluuya did stress that because the reaction fans had to his Spider-Punk character in the 2023 animation was “so intense,” it helped propel the idea for a separate film built around the character. Spider-Punk is an alternate version of Hobie Brown and Spider-Man and will also feature in the much-anticipated third installment of the franchise Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
“It’s exciting to be writing something in this space,” said Kaluuya, who credited filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as “great storytellers” who are supportive of the Spider-Punk animation idea.
“Those Spider-Verse films, they speak to me,” he said. “I was so inspired by them. I think the filmmakers and the animators are some of the best storytellers in the game. So, I want to put myself in environments where I can grow and learn what they know.”
Kaluuya revealed that Lord had given him a note in one of the treatments of the film saying, “films aren’t about people, they’re about relationships.
“They also tap into a joy of cinema and storytelling and animation, and I think joy is so hard to do and that’s something I’m aspiring for. They love what they do and that’s what the audience is really feeling.”
The films in this universe are so fantastic, and another one centered around Spider-Punk is welcome and exciting. Stay tuned for updates.
