DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Actor Wilson Bethel Reflects on Losing CAPTAIN AMERICA Role to Chris Evans
Wilson Bethel, who set to reprise his role as Bullseye in Daredevil: Born Again, recently shared a story from his career that could have taken him down a very different path in the MCU.
The actor revealed how close he came to landing the role of Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger, a role that ultimately went to Chris Evans.
During a Fan Expo event, Bethel opened up about the bittersweet experience of narrowly missing out on one of the MCU’s most iconic characters.
Bethel shared: “The hardest hit I took was, I came very close to being cast as Captain America. I went through multiple rounds of screen testing, and the suit felt incredible.
“There were all these things that made me feel like I was getting the part. And then I remember my agent calling me one day, and they’re like, ‘No, actually, they offered it to Chris Evans or whatever."
It’s hard to imagine anyone but Evans in the role of Captain America. But Evans initially turned down Marvel’s offer, leading the studio to consider several other actors before convincing him to take the role.
Bethel was one of the finalists, making the news of losing out particularly tough. Bethel admitted:
“To be perfectly honest, that was one of the hardest moments in my professional career. It spun me out for a while to be honest with you.
“But I’m also a firm believer that things happen as they’re supposed to, and obviously, Chris did an incredible job in that role.”
While he may not have led the Avengers, he’s embraced the other opportunities that have come his way, including stepping into the shoes of Bullseye in the Daredevil franchise.
He added: “My life, while it hasn’t brought me to lead the Avengers, has been really rich and rewarding in other ways. And honestly, just the fact that things have kind of come full circle in a way, and I still get to be a dude in a suit, is pretty exciting.”
Fans are eager to see Bethel’s return to the Marvel universe when Daredevil: Born Again arrives on Disney+. Set photos have confirmed that Bethel will be wearing an actual Bullseye costume in Born Again.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on March 4th.
