DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Nearly Brought Foggy Nelson Back From the Dead in Season 1 Finale

There was a version of Daredevil: Born Again that almost pulled off a wild twist. According to the cast, the Season 1 finale nearly revealed that Foggy Nelson was still alive… and locked away by Wilson Fisk.

Instead, Marvel Studios stuck with a much harsher reality, and now we know exactly how close things came to going in a very different direction.

Early on, the plan for the series looked drastically different. Foggy Nelson and Karen Page weren’t even part of the story, and Foggy’s death would’ve happened off-screen.

The mystery surrounding his killer was meant to tie into a corrupt cop who later aligned with Mayor Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force. That would’ve been tough to swallow for longtime fans.

Once Dario Scardapane stepped in as showrunner, the story was already deep into development. There wasn’t much room to completely undo major plot points, so the creative team pivoted. The revised version made Bullseye the one who killed Foggy, with the added gut punch that Vanessa Fisk ordered the hit.

Still, the idea of Foggy being alive never fully disappeared behind the scenes.

In Marvel Comics, Foggy has had his fair share of fake-out deaths. One of the most memorable arcs saw him stabbed after visiting Matt Murdock in prison, only to survive and be secretly placed into Witness Protection. It’s the kind of storyline that felt like it could slide right into Born Again without much friction.

And apparently, it almost did.

Charlie Cox opened up about those discussions, confirming that the creative team seriously considered revealing Foggy’s survival in the finale:

"So I'll tell you what's impressive about that. I remember there was a moment where they discussed the possibility of that being the case."

He went on to describe what that version might have looked like, saying:

“At the end of season 1, you saw Foggy in a cage."

But in the end, the idea didn’t stick. Cox explained why they pulled back from it:

"Sadly, that was not the case, because we didn't believe that it was realistic. And the thing about our show is we try to keep it as realistic as possible."

He also acknowledged what fans have been doing ever since Foggy’s fate was revealed:

"I understand the desperate need, the clutching at straws to convince us that he's still alive."

That pretty much shuts the door on any immediate resurrection theories. At least for now. Meanwhile, Vincent D'Onofrio added his own quick but telling comment about the situation:

"I would just like to say, and this is not a lie, that I am happy I wasn't the one that killed Foggy. That's all I can say."

Even without the fake-out twist, the emotional weight of Foggy’s death clearly remains a cornerstone of the story moving forward. It’s one of the defining events shaping Matt Murdock’s journey in the series.

That said, fans won’t be completely without Foggy in Season 2. Elden Henson is expected to return, though a flashback rather than a present-day comeback.

So while Daredevil: Born Again could’ve gone full comic book revival mode, the team chose to keep things grounded. Whether that was the right call depends on how much heartbreak you’re willing to endure for the sake of realism.

One thing’s certain, though. If there’s any character fans aren’t ready to let go of, it’s Foggy Nelson.
