DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 2 Showrunner Teases Defenders Reunion and Says Jessica Jones Return Was “Top of the Checklist”

Marvel fans have been waiting years to see the street-level heroes of New York City cross paths again, and now it’s finally happening. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is gearing up to deliver something fans have been hoping for since the Netflix era ended, and it starts with the return of Jessica Jones.

Showrunner Dario Scardapane and executive producer Sana Amanat have confirmed that bringing back Krysten Ritter wasn’t just a cool idea, it was a priority from day one.

When talking about why Jessica had to be part of the story again, Scardapane said:

"I really love the work that Melissa [Rosenberg] did in Jessica Jones," Scardapane tells GamesRadar+. I think it's one of the best genre television shows done. I think Krysten's created an amazing character.

“Bringing her back in this season was top of the checklist. It's not in the episodes you saw. It's one of the highlights of the season for me creatively, and I think for the viewers. I know for the studio."

Ritter’s version of Jessica Jones has always been one of the most grounded and compelling characters in Marvel’s TV lineup.

For a little context, both Daredevil and Jessica Jones originally launched on Netflix back in 2015, eventually expanding into a connected lineup with Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

All four heroes teamed up in The Defenders, which marked the last time we saw them sharing the screen. Ritter’s last appearance as Jessica came in 2019, when her solo series wrapped its third season.

Now, years later, Marvel is finally picking up those threads again. Amanat explained that Jessica’s return has been something the team has wanted for a long time:

"We have great characters," Amanat adds. "I have to say the previous shows have fantastic characters that they built, and for us, you know, JJ was a wish that we wanted from the beginning.

“So it was exciting that we were able to make it happen, and exciting, exciting to see where she is now many years later."

Story-wise, the timing couldn’t be better. Matt Murdock is in a rough spot after Season 1, on the run and dealing with a New York City under the control of Wilson Fisk, who now sits in power as mayor.

With the Punisher mostly sidelined this season, Daredevil is going to need backup, and Jessica Jones stepping into that chaos feels like the right kind of energy. If the early footage is anything to go by, she hasn’t lost her edge.

This also opens the door for something bigger. It’s been seven years since The Defenders brought these characters together, and while Marvel hasn’t outright confirmed a full reunion, this move definitely feels like a step in that direction. Getting Jessica back in the mix is a big deal, and it raises the question of who might be next.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 hits Disney+ on March 24.
