DAREDEVIL Season 2 Will Feature “The Marvel Version” of Punisher
It seems like fans couldn’t be happier to know that The Punisher will be making his debut in the Marvel cinematic universe in Daredevil Season 2. With Jon Bernthal in the role, fans are all on the edge of their seats to see how exactly the character will be portrayed.
The showrunner of the first season, Steven DeKnight, recently talked to /Film about the upcoming season, and he was asked about The Punisher, and if Marvel was going to finally have the chance to do it right. Over the years, the character has been played by Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, and Ray Stevenson. Bernthal is sure to give us something completely new.
In his response to the question, DeKnight said that this latest incarnation of the character will be the Marvel version.
“The thing about The Punisher, and I think there are great things about each of those versions, but none of them was completely the Marvel version. And none of those movies were under the Marvel Studios banner until they recently got The Punisher back. So this is really the first time that we’re seeing the Marvel Studios from the Iron Man days, when they can control their own product, actually do this character.”
When Lexi Alexander’s ultra-violent R-rated Punisher: War Zone was brought up, DeKnight says not to expect that level of graphic violence:
“That was pretty violent. The first season of Daredevil was violent but I always say it was more implied. It wasn’t nearly as violent as The Walking Dead, a show that I love. On that, if somebody were to crush somebody’s head in a car door, you would’ve seen the head crush on screen but we didn’t want to go quite that far. We wanted to keep it right around PG-16 and not go all the way to the R. I have no idea if they’re planning to push it that far next season but I would be surprised.”
Even if we aren’t going to see oceans of blood spilled by the vigilante, it doesn’t mean it’s not going to be awesome. I’m sure fans are going to get something that they’ll all be very happy with.
DeKnight had to leave the series as the showrunner to work on a film project, but he’s a huge fan of Frank Castle and wishes that he could have helped more in bringing him to life. He tells the site he was heartbroken when he had to leave before the Punisher was introduced, but he feels that the character and the Daredevil series are in good hands.
Daredevil Season 2 will return in 2016.
