DAREDEVIL Series Star Charlie Cox Reveals His Feelings About Ben Affleck's Portrayal of the Character and the 2003 Film
Charlie Cox has fully embodied the character Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, first in the TV series Daredevil at Netflix, and now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in various film projects as well as his current show Daredevil: Born Again. He is incredible in the role, but he isn’t the first to take it on. While Daredevil hasn’t been brought to life on screen as much as Spider-Man or Batman, he was portrayed by Ben Affleck in the 2003 film Daredevil.
When asked his opinion about that movie and Affleck’s performance by host Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cox said, “I like it. I’m not saying I like him. I’m a massive Ben Affleck fan. Yeah. And I think he’s awesome and tremendous.”
When Cox started giving his opinion about the film, he paused and laughed during the answer. Horowitz noticed the reaction, and said, “Your voice cracked there. What just happened?” Cox then explained what he believed must have happened with the movie. “I think what happened with that movie is two things. CGI was invented, and the next day they were like, ‘Let’s make a movie with it,'” he said while laughing. Cox continued, saying, “And so they’re a little premature with the CGI, and also they tried to get the entire Daredevil anthology into a two-hour movie.”
He still pointed out that some moments from the film remained memorable. “There’s moments in it that are iconic. And I love Ben Affleck.”
That movie was made before the standard was set with Marvel movies. While the Spider-Man trilogy in that era was exceptional, most superhero flicks were hit or miss, and none of them had greater ties upping the stakes of their stories. Luckily, fans of Daredevil are getting to see a true adaptation of Matt Murdock’s story in its proper form.
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is available to watch in its entirety on Disney+.
