DAREDEVIL Star Charlie Cox Wants to Bring a New Spin to the Joker in the DCU

Charlie Cox has had an awesome run as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, in the MCU delivering a strong performance that has earned him a devoted fanbase and he’s returned to the role in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series.

But it seems the actor also has his sights set on a darker, more chaotic challenge… in the DC Universe. During a recent Fan Expo panel in San Francisco, Cox, alongside his Daredevil: Born Again co-star Wilson Bethel, opened up about his dream role… The Joker.

Yes, Cox wants to take on the role of arguably one of the most iconic and demanding characters in all of comic book history.

When the discussion turned to DC roles he'd love to play, Cox acknowledged the weight of stepping into the shoes of Gotham’s most infamous villain. He shared:

“I wouldn’t want to take it on based on the actors you have in the past because they’re so brilliant. I was thinking, like, the Joker would be a lot of fun.

“If you could find a way to do something… You know, I mean, Heath Ledger, for me, nailed that part, obviously. If you could find a new take on it in some way, that would be cool.”

The Joker has had an incredible cinematic history starting with Cesar Romero’s flamboyant and fun antics to Jack Nicholson’s devilish charm. Then there’s Ledger’s haunting and incredible performance, Jared Leto’s disappointment, and Joaquin Phoenix’s raw vulnerability.

The Joker has been reimagined in ways that have continuously change up what a villain can be. But, Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight that remains a benchmark for the character.

I wonder how Cox would handle this character if he was cast in the role. In his hands, the character could take on new dimensions, perhaps one rooted in the subtle balance of light and darkness like his Daredevil character, but a little more bonkers.

I don’t know, Cox doesn’t come off as an actor who would fit into the role of Joker, but I’d still be open and curious to see what he brought to the role.

For now, Cox’s focus remains on the Marvel Universe, where he’s set to reprise his role in Daredevil: Born Again, which promises a darker, grittier take on the character, reflecting the mature themes of the original Netflix series while integrating Cox’s recent appearances in the wider MCU.

What do you think about Cox in the role of The Joker? Do you see it?
