Dark and Stormy Trailer For Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson's THE LIGHTHOUSE

“Why’d ya spill yer beans?”

The director of the highly acclaimed horror film The Witch, Robert Eggers, has directed a new historical set horror thriller called The Lighthouse. The movie stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson and the first trailer has been released.

I thought The Witch was an incredibly well-made film and I’ve been curious to see how this next film of his turns out. I’m certainly impressed and intrigued by this first trailer that has been released! I love the dark and stormy vibe of the story. There’s an intense mystery building and it looks like there’s going to be a supernatural element to the story.

I love the attention to the gritty details that Eggers puts into his films and Dafoe and Pattinson look like they are going to deliver outstanding performances!

The film is set in 1890 and the story follows two lighthouse keepers on a remote island in Nova Scotia in the world of sea-faring myths and Dafoe plays an aging lighthouse keeper, named Old. There aren’t a lot of details on the story, but as you’ll see, things start to descend into madness and gets spooky pretty quick.

When talking about shooting the film in black and white 35mm negative and the research they did for the film, the director said:

“I shot in black and white 35mm negative. It’s very tactile; you can see every pore of the actors’ faces. It’s not supposed to be like an old film but it does reference them. The square format was great for filming lighthouses and we had a special lens made to create chromatic film. For the language, my brother and I read a lot of period texts to absorb the vibe of how people spoke. Obviously, Moby Dick is great literature and Melville’s language was an influence. Willem’s dialect was that of a Maine farmer and Robert’s was a sailor’s dialect. We had a book by Sarah Orne Jewett of stories that were transcribed using dialects and that was an important source for us.”

When previously talking about the script for the film, Pattinson said, “It creates a totally unique and ambitious universe and manages to somehow feel scary, suspenseful, wondrous and beautiful all at the same time.”

The Lighthouse opens in New York and LA on October 18, 2019 and it will expand into more theaters from there. Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think!
