DARK HOLLOW Trailer Unleashes a Brutal Creature From the Depths of an Appalachian Coal Mine

Something nasty has crawled out of an Appalachian coal mine, and June Shreiner is going hunting.

Brainstorm Media has released the official trailer for filmmaker Daniel Byers’ indie horror thriller Dark Hollow, a bloody new creature feature that sends a young mother into a fight against a nightmarish monster threatening her family.

If you're into practical-looking monsters, dark tunnels, and characters being forced to venture into places any reasonable person would run screaming from, this one looks like it could deliver some nasty fun.

Shreiner leads the film as a young mother whose life is thrown into chaos after a monstrous creature emerges from the depths of an Appalachian coal mine. With her home and family in danger, she has little choice but to hunt the thing herself and confront whatever evil has been lurking underground.

Coal mines already have everything a horror movie needs before you even toss a monster into one. They're dark, claustrophobic, isolated, and filled with tunnels disappearing into the earth. Add a murderous creature crawling around down there and suddenly a flashlight doesn't feel like nearly enough equipment.

As for the creature, rather than leaning on cheap-looking CGI, the monster has the appearance of an old school man-in-a-suit creation. There's something wonderfully physical about seeing an actual creature occupying the same space as the actors, especially in a grimy horror movie like this. It gives the encounters a tangible quality that can make a monster feel considerably nastier.

Shreiner is joined in the cast by David Garelik, J. Stephen Brantley, Brennon Weese, Ian Deighan, Jonathan Spivey, and Sean Michael Wilkinson.

Byers wrote and directed the movie after previously helming the genre film Eradication along with a number of short films. Brainstorm Media will release Dark Hollow in select U.S. theaters and on VOD on September 4th, 2026.
