Dave Bautista Improvised One of Drax's Best Lines in INFINITY WAR and Details on Alternate Scenes

This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War. If you have not seen the film yet, please avert your eyes now and click that back button.

I was really surprised at how well the Guardians of the Galaxy were handled in Infinity War. I was not a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which left me a little worried about their presence in Infinity War. However, they were used really well, and Drax especially was used for great moments. One of the most memorable is when he says, “Why is Gamorra?” It turns out that line was improvised by Dave Bautista. Man, I can’t believe how many great moments were improvised. Christopher Markus, one of the writers, explained:

“The script only said, ‘Where is Gamora?’ ‘I’ll do you even better: Who is Gamora?’ And then one day Bautista just goes, ‘I’ll do you one better: Why is Gamora?’ It’s like, ‘OK, you’re very good at your job.’

It’s also fun to find out what changed between drafts of the script. For instance, Markus and Stephen McFeely explained that in one draft, Spider-Man doesn’t chill with Doctor Strange and Iron Man. Instead, Falcon is hanging with them. Markus explains that it was then changed because there wasn’t as strong of a connection.

There was one [version] where Spider-Man did not go to space, and where Falcon went to space. And it was fun, it was interesting, it’s always great to have those guys in various situations and there was a lot to do with them in both situations, but we weren’t getting as much emotion as we could if we brought them back to people who know them.

Of course, there’s also the scene we were all expecting: the reunion of Captain America and Iron Man. This was reportedly cut because of pacing, and I don't blame them. The movie is already jam-packed with story and details, a big reunion scene would've either slowed down the movie, or it would not have done the moment justice. Plus, the movie's about Thanos. Not the Avengers.

Our first sort of wonky draft [had] the idea that they had to get back in the same room together and deal with that,” McFeely said. “[But it] meant that you’re slowing down your Thanos [Infinity] Stones [quest] to deal with other threats from other movies. And that became, as much as we wanted to do, and as many times as we wrote those scenes, it became clear that this movie needed to be propulsive and be about Thanos and what he represented to the Avengers.

What has been your favorite change that has been revealed? Your favorite improvised moment?
