Dave Filoni Teases a Very Different Empire in AHSOKA Season 2: “Some Weird Stuff Going On”

Grand Admiral Thrawn is looking to bring the Empire back in Ahsoka Season 2, but don't expect a simple return to the Galactic Empire that Emperor Palpatine once ruled. According to Dave Filoni, this new version is going to be something very different, and things could get pretty weird.

Star Wars fans have been waiting three years for the series to return, and unfortunately, they'll have to wait a little longer. Season 2 was originally expected to arrive this summer, but it's now scheduled to premiere in January 2027.

The first season left us with plenty of unfinished business. Thrawn successfully returned to the main Star Wars galaxy with plans to restore the Empire, while Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren remained stranded on Peridea, where the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker was revealed to be watching over them.

Meanwhile, Baylan Skoll was pursuing something connected to the mysterious Mortis Gods, opening the door to some of the stranger mythology introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Filoni has already confirmed that the Mortis Gods are "definitely a thing" in Season 2, and now he's teasing even more unusual developments involving Thrawn's plans for the galaxy.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Filoni revealed that Thrawn's new Empire will have “some weird stuff going on” and that this “is not the Empire” audiences knew.

That's an interesting tease, especially since Thrawn has always been a very different kind of villain from Palpatine. He's a military strategist who relies on intelligence, careful planning, and understanding his enemies rather than ruling through the dark side of the Force.

So what exactly makes his version of the Empire so strange? Filoni obviously isn't giving away those details just yet, but with the Mortis Gods playing a role in the upcoming season, it's possible that the show's more supernatural elements could become part of the larger conflict.

Filoni also discussed how he approaches the more mysterious aspects of Star Wars, comparing the different ways fans interpret the franchise to the opposing beliefs of Mulder and Scully from The X-Files.

He explained: “Some of the audience is Scully, and some of the audience is Mulder. You have to serve both. Some of audiences can be, ‘That’s crazy, come on.’ And some are like, ‘Well…maybe that’s true!’ Why do you so easily believe in a Force Ghost? What’s the truth there? Fans will litigate that, and I think that’s the beauty of the fandom.”

It's a fun comparison, and it gives us a better idea of what Filoni wants to explore. Star Wars has always mixed science fiction with fantasy, but some of the ideas introduced in The Clone Wars pushed the franchise into much stranger territory.

The Mortis Gods are a perfect example. These powerful Force beings represent aspects of the Force itself, and their mythology has some major implications for how the Star Wars universe works.

Bringing those ideas into live-action could make Ahsoka Season 2 one of the more unusual Star Wars projects we've seen. Of course, not every fan is excited about that direction.

Filoni's comments have already sparked debate online, with some fans who want to see the franchise explore its more mystical mythology and others questioning where the story is headed.

Personally, I'm interested in seeing how all of this connects to Thrawn. He's already a dangerous enemy without supernatural forces getting involved, so throwing something unexpected into his plans could make things even more interesting.

There's still a lot we don't know about what Filoni has planned, but between Thrawn's new Empire, the Mortis Gods, and the unresolved story on Peridea, Ahsoka Season 2 has plenty of interesting territory to explore.

We'll find out just how weird things get when Ahsoka returns in January 2027.
