Dave Franco and O'Shea Jackson Jr. Get Pulled Into Total Stoner Mayhem in the Funny New IDIOTS Trailer
Some jobs are doomed before they even begin, and the latest trailer for Idiots makes it pretty clear that Mark and Davis should never have been trusted with this one.
IFC has released another hilarious trailer for the upcoming stoner comedy, which throws Dave Franco and O'Shea Jackson Jr. into an increasingly ridiculous nightmare involving a spoiled rich kid, a trip to rehab, drugs, violence, psychedelics, and what appears to be an impressive collection of terrible decisions.
The movie looks like exactly the kind of late-summer comedy that knows how stupid it wants to be and fully commits to the chaos.
The film originally premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival under the much less theater-marquee-friendly title The Sh*theads before getting renamed Idiots. Considering the people we're dealing with here, the new title fits them pretty well.
Franco and Jackson play Mark and Davis, two spectacularly unqualified guys who somehow get hired to transport a wealthy teenage troublemaker named Sheridan to rehab. Sheridan is played by Mason Thames, who audiences will recognize from The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon.
Naturally, getting Sheridan from point A to point B doesn't go according to plan. Their supposedly simple assignment turns into a dangerous and increasingly unhinged mess as Sheridan reveals just how difficult, and apparently psychotic, he can be.
The official description offers a pretty good idea of the disaster awaiting them: "When two unqualified bozos are hired to transfer a rich teen to rehab, their straightforward gig quickly spirals into dangerous mayhem.
“Dave Franco & O'Shea Jackson Jr are perfectly (mis)matched as Mark and Davis, the fumbling circumstantial chaperones in charge of transporting the increasingly psychotic Sheridan (a brilliant Mason Thames)."
Joining Franco, Jackson, and Thames in the cast are Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun, and Peter Dinklage, and the trailer looks completely committed to sending this group of characters deeper and deeper into absurd territory.
Sundance described the movie as a "raucous and wildly entertaining descent into madness," and offered this tease of what filmmaker Macon Blair has cooked up: "Blair treats us to his signature absurdist sense of humor and douses it with gasoline and psychedelics, crafting an uncanny world where the worst intentions net the highest yields."
That's a fitting description for a comedy built around a bunch of people making dumb choices, creating even bigger problems for themselves, and then stumbling through the consequences over the course of the movie. Idiots isn't trying to disguise what kind of movie it is. The stupidity is part of the fun.
Blair wrote and directed the film, working from a story he developed with Alex Orr. He previously directed I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore as well as the recent The Toxic Avenger remake starring Dinklage. His taste for dark comedy and eccentric characters seems like a particularly good match for this material.
There's a certain pleasure in watching fictional idiots make choices you know are going to end horribly, especially when every attempt to fix the situation only makes things worse. Franco and Jackson look like a fun comedy pairing, while Thames appears ready to make their lives an absolute nightmare.
The movie looks like a crazy fun time, and if you're in the mood for an extra-dumb stoner comedy filled with drugs, bad judgment, absurd humor, and characters who probably shouldn't be responsible for anything more complicated than ordering lunch, Idiots might be worth checking out.
IFC will release Idiots in U.S. theaters on August 28th, 2026.
