David Ayer Turned Down SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel, GOTHAM CITY SIRENS is on Hold, and BRIGHT 2 is Still in The Works

David Ayer recently gave an update on several of the projects that he’s been attached to recently. This update came from the Television Critics Association panel for the new Fox drama he’s working on titled Deputy. The series stars Stephen Dorff as a deputy who becomes sheriff of Los Angeles after the sheriff suddenly dies.

As far as his film projects go, one of the things that Ayer revealed is that he did have the opportunity to direct a sequel to Suicide Squad but he’s the one who chose to step away and do something else. He explained, “I had a chance to do it, but I went another way.”

That seems like smart choice from him, and in the end, it worked out great as James Gunn came on board to reboot it. Ayer isn’t done with comic book movies, though! He went on to say:

“I love the world creation of it and I love the power of the IP and the fans. It’s dangerous. It’s like juggling chainsaws, but I am drawn to it and it’s definitely an arena I’ll play in again.”

One of the comic book films that he’s been attached to is Gotham City Sirens, which would be a film that focuses on Harley Quinn and a team of female supervillains which would include Poison Ivy, and Batgirl might also be involved. As far as that project goes, though, Ayer said that it’s been put on hold. When asked about it, he said, “No, I think it’s on pause.”

There are a couple of projects that he is actively working on right now, though! The first of those projects is Netflix’s Bright 2, a sequel to the film which starred Will Smith as a human cop and Joel Edgerton as an orc cop patrolling the streets of a modern-day Los Angeles set in an alternate fantasy world. When asked about that project specifically, he said:

“Still in development. We’re working on it so hopefully, we’ll be able to mount that up soon. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to explore the world more. I think people felt like there was a lot of doorways to explore. People were like, ‘Tell us about the dragon. Tell us about this, the history.’ So it’s a very rich world and I think we’re going to drill down some more.”

I actually really enjoyed Bright and the sequel is something I’ve been looking forward to seeing, so I’m happy it’s still in development. The other film he’s currently developing is his remake of the classic war film, The Dirty Dozen. That might end up being the next movie he directs. In regards to that film he said, “I’m working on a script right now. So pending a great story that the studio likes, it’s on.”

What are your thoughts on Ayer and the films that he’s working on? Do you like his style and the stories he tells?
