David Duchovny Says THE X-FILES Series Will Play Like a Six Hour Movie

In a recent interview with THR, David Duchovny talked about the upcoming X-Files six-episode series event. This is one of the most highly anticipated series revivals being developed, and I can't wait to see how they move the story of these characters along. According to the actor, it was never the original plan to bring the series back to the small screen.

"When I was doing the show, I always assumed – because we started to do the movies – that we would naturally transition to not carrying the load of doing a full season of the show but doing a movie every four or five years."

Unfortunately the movies didn't do as well as they had hoped, but I couldn't be happier that it's coming back as a TV series. As much as I wanted to see a movie get made, I think bringing it back like this was the perfect idea.

"That didn't work out with the movies. … [The second movie] did well, but I guess not well enough. Fox made some mistakes with that movie that hurt the franchise and they didn't seem to want to do another movie. So as the TV landscape changed and as it became conceivable to do this show without doing 22 or 25 [episodes] of them on television, then it seemed like a natural thing.
"We all started to think, 'I don’t mind doing it on TV if we don’t have to do a full season.' We just could make it like a six-hour movie."

I'm up for a six-hour X-Files movie! What fan wouldn't be? Duchovny goes on to talk about coming back to reprise his role, and jumping back into the world of X-Files saying:

"It's been awhile since I've played Mulder so it's going to be strange for sure the first couple days. Luckily Gillian [Anderson] will be there and we'll be there for each other to say, 'That doesn’t seem right or something like that.' All the principals are back. Chris [Carter] will be there, Gillian will be there, I'll be there and we can all check on each other and say, 'Is this the show?' Because we'll find it. It's just a matter of relaxing and letting it happen."

He then explained that the series is going to be the same show it has always been, except for the fact that the the times have changed and the characters are older. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all comes together. I do hope that they involve the sci-fi UFO conspiracy elements, though.
