Director David Fincher has explained in the past that the third season of his incredible Netflix serial killer series Mindhunter most likely wouldn’t happen. But, not long after that, he said that he would love to revisit the series at some point to complete the story that he set out to tell.

Well, according to a report from Small Screen, Fincher and Netflix are discussing a possible third season of Mindhunter! If this is true, it’s great and exciting news for fans of the series!

Back in January 2020, the show’s stars, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, were released from their contracts and the show was put on “indefinite hold” by Netflix. If they did decide that they officially want to move forward with Season 3, they would bring back the original cast. There’s no point in doing it without them.

The only other project that Fincher is currently attached to is The Killer, a passion project that he’s been trying to get off the ground for years. Netflix offered him the opportunity to make it. With the huge success of Mank, which earned ten Academy Award nominations, I’m sure that Netflix will let Fincher do whatever the hell he wants.

When previously talking about Mindhunter and the reason that it might not continue, he explained that it was a very expensive show that he’s not sure “if it makes sense to continue.” He said, “It was an expensive show. It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the cost.”

It was also explained that the series was “exhausting” for Fincher. The filmmaker previously explained, “it’s a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, 'I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.'”

Fincher said, “I certainly needed some time away. We had all hands on deck to finish [season two] and we didn’t have a ton of scripts and a ton of outlines and a bible standing by for season three. I’ll admit I was a little bit like ‘I don’t know that I’m ready to spend another two years in the crawl space.'”

Well, with time away from the series and with Mank being a huge success, maybe things have changed. Maybe Fincher and Netflix are ready to jump back into Mindhunter and give the fans a third season. I hope so!
