David Fincher Is Developing a CHINATOWN Prequel Series for Netflix with Robert Towne

David Fincher and Robert Towne are teaming up to write and produce a prequel series to Roman Polanski’s 1974 classic film Chinatown. Towne wrote the script for the original film and won an Oscar for it. The film told the story of a private eye hired to expose an adulterer who instead uncovers far more unexpected and unpleasant things.

The project is being produced by Netflix, and the series will focus on “a young Jake Gittes (played in the film by Jack Nicholson) as he plies his business in a town where the wealthy and corruption involves areas like land, oil and gangs.”

Fincher might end up directing the pilot episode that he’s writing with Towne, but that’s currently not part of the deal. Once the pilot episode is written, a decision on who will direct will be made.

Fincher has produced a couple of great shows at Netflix already that include House of Cards and Mindhunter. I’m sure he’ll bring the same high level of quality storytelling to this Chinatown prequel series. He is currently set to direct the Netflix film Mank, which chronicles the battles between screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles over Citizen Kane, for which both shared the Oscar for screenwriting.

What do you think about Fincher and Towne developing a Chinatown prequel series?
