David Fincher's MINDHUNTER Season 2 Will Center Around The Atlanta Child Murders

I'm currently in the middle of watching David Fincher's Netflix series Mindhunter and it's one hell of a great show and absolutely fascinating. The story follows a couple of FBI agents in 1977 who are studying the minds of serial killers so that they help catch them faster because, “How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks?”

The series is based on the 1996 nonfiction novel by Mark Olshaker and John Douglas‘ called "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit." Even though it's a mostly fictionalized series, it is inspired by real-life events.

Thanks to series composer Jason Hill, we've learned what Season 2 is going to focus on. While talking to Billboard, he revealed that the second season will examine the Atlanta child murders. If you're not familiar with this tragic event it was a string of 28 murders, mostly children and adolescents, that took place in Atlanta between 1979 and 1981.

“Next year we’re looking at the Atlanta child murders, so we’ll have a lot more African-American music which will be nice. The music will evolve. It’s intended to support what’s happening with the show and for the show to evolve radically between seasons.”

The Atlanta child murders came to an end when Wayne Williams was arrested after an FBI stakeout in 1981. He was tried and convicted of two of the adult murders and was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison. Williams maintains his innocence, but thanks to modern DNA evidence the cases involving his child victims have been strengthened. He was never officially tried for those child murders.

The second season will bring back the original characters from season one as the real counterparts of these characters were involved with the investigation. Jonathan Groff’s Holden Ford is a creation for Mindhunter, but he is based on the real agent John E. Douglas.

Mindhunter also stars Holt McCallanay (Sully), Anna Torv (Fringe) and Hannah Gross (Unless). It was directed by Fincher, Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), Tobias Lindholm (A War, A Hijacking) and Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror, U Want Me 2 Kill Him?).

Hopefully, the series gets picked up for a second season.
