David Gordon Green Will Not Direct THE EXORCIST: DECEIVER

The Exorcist: The Believer director David Gordon Green will not return to helm the sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. The filmmaker never seemed to commit to the sequel and after how poorly the first movie turned out, I’m not surprised that he’s passing on the sequel.

When previously asked if he would return to direct the sequel, Green said: “I think hope is … My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled. But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.”

I’ve heard that Green is kind of tired of making horror movies anyway. So, the producers are now on the hunt for a new director because they are hell-bent on continuing to make these films.

Universal and Blumhouse acquired the Exorcist franchise rights for a trilogy from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M, so I guess they have to try and make a profit off of it. I think that was a poor gamble for them. There’s obviously not a lot of interest in the resurrection of this franchise.

The director is currently directing Ben Stiller in a movie titled Nutcrackers, which follows “the work-obsessed Mike (Stiller), who must reluctantly travel to rural Ohio to look after his four rambunctious nephews after their parents die in a car accident. What begins as a three-day trip to find foster care turns into weeks of farm-life mayhem – and the realization that he doesn’t need to find them a home, they’ve found one for him.”

The Exorcist: Believer was originally set for April 18, 2025, but that might change.
