David Harbour Reveals New BLACK WIDOW Details Involving Natasha's Relationship with Her "Family"
Thanks to David Harbour, we have some new details to share regarding Black Widow that involves Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff and the relationship she has with her “family.” In the trailers for the film, we’ve learned that her “family” consists of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, and Harbour as Alexei Shostakov a.k.a. Red Guardian.
So, what is the story behind this family and how they came together? Harbour revealed those details in the new book Marvel's Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book, a special publication from Titan Books giving fans a deep dive into the movie. The actor explained:
"Now, the connection to him and Black Widow is that they were set up as a spy family in America in the ’90s. So, Rachel Weisz’s character, Melina, was sort of the mom, Alexei was the dad, and Natasha and Yelena were their little kids. We see that in the beginning of the movie, and they sort of function as a family..
“They knew each other from long ago and then they lost touch for almost twenty years. And when we pick up, Alexei’s had this deep knowledge of Natasha in a certain way that no one else had when she was a kid. He took her from the Red Room and also put her back into the Red Room because he believed in this cause."
When previously talking about the movie, Kevin Feige acknowledged that they have "hinted at [Natasha Romanoff's backstory] throughout all the other films," and he promised that they are approaching this movie in a “completely unexpected way.” He went on to explain that "She’s been up to a lot all along – in between when we see her in the other movies – some of which will be surprising to people."
In the film, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
Directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) from a script by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle), Black Widow was set to be released on November 6th, but now it will be released on May 7th, 2021.
