David Harbour Says James Gunn Thinks CREATURE COMMANDOS Is "Some of the Best Stuff He's Ever Written"
The first project that James Gunn is releasing for DC Studios is the animated series Creature Commandos. This is the project that is going to kick off DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters plan that he is building with co-CEO, Peter Safran.
The Creature Commandos team consists of monsters and superheroes that are fighting Nazis during World War II. The team consists of a human, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein's monster, and a gorgon. They work under the supervision of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).
It was previously explained that the story for the project is so big that the only way it could be told is through animation because it would be way too expensive to pull off for live-action. But, it was previously revealed that many of these characters, “will also play the roles in live-action later on in the DCU.”
David Harbour is voicing Eric Frankenstein, and when talking about the show, he hyped it up saying that Gunn thinks it’s some of the best stuff he’s ever written. He said:
"Yeah, we recorded a bunch of stuff. And I mean not only do I get to play in the DC universe, I get to play in the James Gunn DC universe, which is a whole new exciting thing. I didn’t know what it was when it was sent to me, I met with James and he laid out a lot of stuff. It’s really exciting, he considers it some of the best stuff he’s ever written. It’s hilarious, and the character is great. I think it’s been announced that it’s Frankenstein and it’s a very colorful, terrific character."
Harbour went on to talk about the vibe on while working on the show saying: "We’ve started to shoot stuff. I’m not one to really break but during this, it’s wildly funny stuff." It sounds like whatever this series is going to deliver it’s going to offer some solid laughs, which I totally need in my life!
The voice cast also includes Sean Gunn as Weasel and GI Robot, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, with Steve Agee reprising his role as John Economos from Peacemaker.
Gunn previously said of the series: "Creature Commandos is based on the great team from DC. What we're doing with the DCU is, we are having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies, and games all intertwine within the same universe. We're going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this as well as in other things, some of which we've already cast. I've written all seven episodes of the show.”
Creature Commandos doesn’t have a release date yet, but Gunn has confirmed the series will drop before his film Superman: Legacy, which is currently slated for July 11, 2025.
