David Harbour Says the Russos Have a "Special Sauce" That Makes AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Work

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest and most ambitious films yet, and one of its stars, David Harbour, is giving credit where it’s due. The Thunderbolts and Stranger Things actor admitted that he wasn’t sure the massive crossover could even work at first, but after seeing the Russos at the helm again, he’s completely on board.

When speaking with ScreenRant about directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Harbour revealed his early doubts and just how much the filmmakers impressed him.

“I was not even convinced when we started, and this movie's gonna be really good. They have a special sauce.”

Harbour, who returns as the Red Guardian after his last outing in Thunderbolts, went on to explain why the Russo Brothers have such a unique handle on these mega-crossover films.

“I don't even really understand, but they just know how to do these things… there's something about the layers in which they put the comedy and the drama and the surprises and the scale and the epicness and all that stuff. It's incredible.”

The Russos are no strangers to pulling off great things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their resume includes Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame.

Since stepping away from Marvel, they’ve kept busy with projects like Netflix’s The Gray Man and The Electric State, as well as Apple’s Cherry starring Tom Holland. But now they’re back steering the MCU into its next big event, and fans are hoping they can bring back the magic.

Harbour will be joined in Avengers: Doomsday by his Thunderbolts co-stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell. And if the rumors are true, fans might even see Chris Evans return, as speculation about his involvement has skyrocketed after the actor was spotted looking suspiciously Steve Rogers-ready again.

With the Russos once again orchestrating Marvel’s grand spectacle and a stacked lineup of heroes and anti-heroes, Avengers: Doomsday could deliver the kind of scale and energy fans have been wanting to see since Endgame.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
