David Harbour Teases That STRANGER THINGS Season 4 Will Offer a "Big, Huge Reveal About Hopper's Backstory"
David Harbour has played some great roles over the years in films and series like Kinsey, Brokeback Mountain, Quantum of Solace, Revolutionary Road, The Newsroom, Suicide Squad, and so many more, but nothing rocketed him to fame like the role of Hopper in the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things. Harbour plays the beloved small-town officer who gets into the thick of the mystery and terror plaguing Hawkins, Indiana, and becomes the adopted father to Eleven, a young girl with extraordinary powers.
Hopper is a hilarious, gruff, and lovable fan-favorite character, and fans were worried when it looked like we may have lost him at the end of season three last summer. But thanks to a teaser trailer that was released a few months ago, we found out that Hopper is alive, but was taken prisoner, and is living in the East Russian peninsula of Kamchatka. While we don’t know how or when he will be able to get back to his friends in Indiana, we do have some insight on what we will learn about the character this season.
In a recent appearance at Liverpool Comic-Con, Harbour revealed some Season 4 insight into Hopper’s past. When talking about the boxes that Eleven found in Hopper’s cabin in Season 2, he said:
Eleven discovers "five boxes, one of which has Brenner's stuff from Hawkins Lab, one of which says 'Dad,' and one of which says 'Vietnam,' and one says 'New York. So there are these three things that we've established in the season that if we don't pay off, it means that they're bad writers. And the Duffer brothers are very good writers. So I know specifically that in Season 4 we will give you a big, huge reveal about Hopper's backstory."
So although it was just glossed over in that second season shot, those were pieces that were set up for us to come back to. He added:
Fans have "sort of sensed that in certain ways, but we haven't really told you about [it]," Harbour added, pointing to past revelations that Hopper lost young daughter Sara (Elle Graham) to cancer and that he was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War.”
He went on to talk about the excitement of keeping this secret about his character, and it finally paying off:
"I'm so excited about revealing this aspect of the character. It's one of the things that I’ve known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven’t expressed it yet. And finally we're gonna express it in a big way. It's my favorite thing about him that you guys don't know about him yet, but it has to do with these backstories of New York, Vietnam, and dad. And I'm really excited for you guys to know more about that, and it relates, of course, to things he’s doing with Eleven and Joyce and things like that."
I didn’t even need to know all this to know I’m so excited for the next season of Stranger Things. The intricacies of the plot and characters are what make this show seriously great. It’s good to know we are going to be focusing on Hopper a little more this season, because hopefully that means they’ll be working on getting him home.
Stranger Things Season 4 is set to hit Netflix in 2021.
