David Leitch Confirms Netflix’s GEARS OF WAR Movie Has a Finished Script and Teases Bigger Plans
Netflix’s Gears of War movie is finally making some progress, and director David Leitch has shared a promising update on the long-awaited video game adaptation. The script is finished, the creative team is excited about what they’ve got, and there are already discussions about turning the franchise into something much bigger.
Leitch, who directed Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train, recently spoke with ScreenRant and confirmed that a version of the screenplay has been completed. While the project still has some work ahead of it before cameras start rolling, things appear to be moving in the right direction.
The director also brought up the upcoming game Gears of War: E-Day, which is bringing players back to the beginning of humanity's brutal war against the Locust.
“Obviously, E-Day is about to be released,” Leitch said, before sharing his enthusiasm for the movie's potential to launch an entire franchise.
“I think everybody’s excited about the potential of this as a film universe, and so we couldn’t be more excited about that. Hopefully, it’ll be coming to fruition soon. That’s probably all I can tell you. And I wish I could tell you more because there’s so much cool stuff going on.”
It's great to hear that Netflix and the filmmakers are thinking beyond a single movie. The world of Gears of War has plenty of material to explore, from its massive battles and terrifying creatures to the soldiers fighting to keep humanity alive.
Netflix first announced its plans to adapt the hit video game franchise in 2022, revealing that both a live-action movie and an animated series were in development.
In 2023, Jon Spaihts, whose credits include Dune, signed on to write the screenplay. Leitch joined the project in May 2025, and a few months later, he and his wife and producing partner, Kelly McCormick, confirmed that they were collaborating with Spaihts on the script.
We also have an idea of what the movie will explore. Plot details revealed in June tells us that the story will focus on the earliest days of Delta Squad and its fight against the Locust invasion.
The official description reads: “The origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity.”
Leitch’s experience directing intense action sequences could be a great fit for the franchise's chainsaw-equipped weapons, oversized soldiers, and absolutely insane battles against the Locust.
Originally developed by Epic Games, Gears of War has become one of gaming's most recognizable action franchises, and fans have been waiting years to see it make the jump to live-action.
Netflix hasn't announced a release date for the movie, and Leitch's comments suggest there's still some waiting ahead. But with a completed screenplay and a director who clearly sees the potential for more stories, this is an encouraging update.
Now we just need to see who Netflix recruits to bring Delta Squad to life.
