David Spade Says Chris Farley Approached Him About Making a Third Film Two Months Before His Death
David Spade was one of the close friends of actor Chris Farley. The two were in the same cast of Saturday Night Live, and they made two comedies in which they co-starred, Tommy Boy and Black Sheep. The movies were not box office smashes, but they went on to make unprecedented numbers in home sales as they became cult classics to their fans.
Sadly, Farley passed away in 1997, and Spade says that just two months before, Farley approached him about making a third buddy comedy. In a recent interview with Esquire magazine, Spade said:
“Two years after ‘Tommy Boy’ came out, they told us it made $100 million on video. We couldn’t believe it. It really grew over time. We talked about doing another one, but Farley wanted to do more drama, so I said, ‘Go do that.’ I ran into him two months before [he died] and he was like, ‘Everyone always talks about ‘Tommy Boy’ and ‘Black Sheep.’ It’s not as much fun out there. Let’s try to get one going again.’ … I think about Farley every day. I have his old coat from ‘Tommy Boy.'”
It’s such a bummer for friends, family, and fans of Farley that we didn’t get more time with the actor. He was such a natural talent, and so genuinely funny. It would have been great to see him in tons more comedies over the years. But he lives on in the films he did make, and he will never be forgotten.
