DC Universe's STARGIRL Series Will Be a Reimagining DC Comics' JUSTICE SOCIETY and Include S.T.R.I.P.E.
Thanks to Geoff Johns we have some interesting new details to share with you regarding the live-action DC Universe series Stargirl. The series was announced about a month ago and that announcement came with the following brief synopsis:
The show’s about Courtney Whitmore, whose mom gets remarried to Pat Dugan, and they move to Blue Valley Nebraska. She learns that Pat Dugan used to be a member of the Justice Society of America, and so she steals her stepfather’s stuff and goes for a joyride.
We've now learned that the series will actually be a reimagining of DC Comics' Justice Society. When talking to CBR, Johns said:
"Much like, you know, Arrow reimagining Green Arrow or Smallville [on Superman], I’m taking a brand new direction on Justice Society. It’ll be, I think, more closer to the lore. I wanted to kind of do a brand new reimagining of it for Stargirl."
The Justice Society of America is a popular team of legacy heroes from DC Comics and Johns went on to reveal that the character S.T.R.I.P.E. will also be included in the series.
"You can’t do Stargirl without S.T.R.I.P.E. Yeah, he’s in there. It’s cool because, I have to say, with Titans and with Doom Patrol, Warner Bros. has given us the ability to build Robotman and we’re doing Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane and Negative Man and, in Titans, there’s great scenes with Dick Grayson in the Batcave."
Patrick Dugan a.k.a. S.T.R.I.P.E. was first Introduced by Jerry Siegel and Hal Sherman in 1941’s Action Comics #40. Dugan started crime fighting, as the adult sidekick to the Star Spangled Kid. He then partnered up with his step-daughter Courtney Whitmore a.k.a. Stargirl. He wears an armored suit called S.T.R.I.P.E. which is locked and loaded with a number of ballistic weapons and utilities, and it allows him to fly. Johns went on to talk about bringing S.T.R.I.P.E. to life for the series, saying:
"Really, I think, with the budgets and the time and the creative has pushed this stuff to be closer to lore and celebrate the lore and I think that’s going to be a lot of fun. So making S.T.R.I.P.E. is hard, like a Gorilla Grodd, you know? Greg Berlanti and I were talking the other day and he was like, ‘You know, when we started doing Flash, in the pilot we put in the gorilla cage that was bent open and we had the Grodd thing there and was like, oh, gorilla was affected by the explosion and, at the time, people were like, how are we ever going to do Gorilla Grodd? How are we going to do Gorilla Grodd? And they were like, well, we want to try. We want to try.’ I think Grodd is kind of this great — he was like the first thing, and now you look at everything that’s happening like, ‘Yeah, we could pull off S.T.R.I.P.E.'"
I like what I'm hearing here and this Stargirl series could be an incredibly fun show if done right. What are your thoughts on the new details that have been revealed?
