The upcoming live action Static Shock movie being produced by Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment has found its screenwriter. The movie will be written by Randy McKinnon, who wrote Disney+’s football drama Safety along with the Netflix horror drama Chambers.

Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) is a producer on the project, which he’s excited about. He previously said:

“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around black superheroes; our community deserves that. Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros on this initial step.”

Virgil Hawkins, a.k.a. Static Shock was created by Milestone Media and DC Comics in the 1990s. Most fans are familiar with the character thanks to the Kids’ WB animated series that aired in the early 2000s. But, here’s a description of the character:

Accidental exposure to an experimental mutagen leaves geeky high school student Virgil with super powers. Able to control electromagnetic forces, he channels his newfound powers to fight evil, aided by his pal Osgood, who builds gadgets to help Virgil fight crime.

It’s explained that the project “has an urgency and agency surrounding it thanks to its heavy-hitting producers, who have stated an intention to build a cinematic universe centered around black superheroes.”

There seems to be a lot of excitement for this film project and I hope that the creative team delivers a film that the fans will be proud of.
