DC's THE METAL MEN Is Getting an Animated Film From Disney Animation Legends Ron Clements and John Musker
DC’s The Metal Men is getting a animated feature film adaptation and the talent who will be developing this project are Disney animation legends, Ron Clements and John Musker. These are the guys who previously brought us classics such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and The Princess and the Frog, and now they are headed to Warner Animation Group.
Clement and Musker are producing, and they’ve written a treatment. They will most likely direct the project and are teaming up with Celeste Ballard to write the script for the film. She recently worked on Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The Metal Men were created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru in 1962, and the story revolves around “a brilliant scientist, William Magnus, and his creations: six highly advanced robots who have powers and personalities associated with their respective metals — gold, iron, lead, tin, mercury and platinum.”
I’m not that familiar with The Metal Men, but the stories are said to have “vacillated in tone from comedic to somber, with the group at times being on the run from government agents or even being robot assassins. The group sometimes incorporated a whole periodic table’s worth of metal elements as new characters.”
These characters have appeared in various animated shows in the 1990s and 2000s, and apparently WB has tried to develop live-action projects involving the characters with X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, writer and executive Geoff Johns and Men In Black filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld.
Craig Peck is executive producing the project along with Alison Abbate, who previously produced films such as The Iron Giant and The Corpse Bride).
I’m excited to see what comes of this project, especially with Ron Clements and John Musker leading the charge. This could end up being a great film!
