DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Editor Says Original Post-Credits Scene With Gambit Was Scrapped for Feeling Too "Traditional Marvel"
Deadpool & Wolverine was expected to have cameos, irreverent humor, and plenty of action, and it delivered on all fronts, but one thing its creators didn’t want to do was deliver a generic post-credits scene. I love Marvel mid and post-credits scenes.
Though they may be formulaic, they’re usually exciting. It’s been reported that Deadpool & Wolverine's post-credits scene originally featured a look at Channing Tatum's Gambit being rescued in The Void via the “Marvel Sparkle Circle.” But those who made Deadpool 3 wanted to go the less expected route instead.
Speaking to Screen Rant, co-editor Shane Reid outlines why the credits began with a heartwarming tribute to the legacy of Fox's Marvel movies and ended with the unveiling of Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) and his foul-mouthed tirade against Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).
Reid explained:
"A rhythm to the end credit sequence that we had [was] the Legacy reel [which] was a really important part of the process. Then it was from there, we knew that we had this really wonderful mic-drop-coda with Johnny Storm that was going to close the film out."
That, unfortunately, left no space for Tatum's hero, as they felt it resembled a typical Marvel after-credits setup a little too on the nose. He went on:
"I think the Gambit Sparkle Circle feels like a traditional Marvel coda, and I think what these guys were always trying to do was sort of subvert the audience's expectations in that sense."
For his part, Tatum previously told Collider that "something is happening" on the TVA monitors during that post-credits scene, one that suggests Gambit lives to fight another day.
We know Tatum is campaigning hard for this role, and Reynolds has been championing him as well. I have always wanted to see Channing Tatum as Gambit, and this one movie just wasn’t enough.
I hope Kevin Feige sees the great possibilities in casting him in a full standalone movie, as I know fans would show up to watch it.
