DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Director Shawn Levy Is Already Thinking about DEADPOOL 4
Marvel fans might still be riding the high from the awesomeness of Shawn Levy’s record-smashing Deadpool & Wolverine, but the director is already looking ahead.
With the threequel clearing over $1.3 billion at the box office and becoming one of the biggest hits Marvel has seen in years, the question of a Deadpool 4 isn’t just inevitable, it’s officially on Levy’s mind.
When Deadpool & Wolverine arrived last summer, it hit at a time when talk about “superhero fatigue” was louder than ever, and its runaway success proved audiences still crave comic book movies when they feel like a genuine event. The movie’s impact has only highlighted how challenging it is for the genre to keep that energy going.
In a recent chat with Kevin McCarthy, Levy opened up about whether he’s thinking about another film for Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth, and his answer was pretty clear.
"I’m a fan of a lot of threes in the trilogies of movies," he explained. "I love Back to the Future 3. I love Return of the King. [Endgame was] such a superior audience experience," because "that took 10 years and how many movies to earn that [Falcon and Captain America callback] 'On your left,' and to Fox to Marvel."
He went on to emphasize how much legacy storytelling matters, syaing: "When you are telling a story that has the benefit of [a] legacy connection between the audience and the characters, you’re sort of like on second base already."
For Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine naturally tapped into that long history: "When I look at Deadpool & Wolverine, that became a love letter to that [20th Century Fox] legacy. We were also able to tap into years of legacy storytelling."
But nostalgia can only carry things so far, and he knows the next installment would need a fresh angle. That’s where the contemplation begins.
"I don’t know about rule of threes, 'cause the truth is, as I contemplate, for instance, 'Okay, how do we make another Deadpool movie?' Sequels are hard. They are dauntingly hard.
“I made three Night at the Museum movies. It kicked my ass every time. And so, yeah, having seen how the sausage of sequels is made, I find the whole subject a little stressful because you want to get it right."
Reports have floated the idea that Ryan Reynolds is considering an ensemble-style return for Wade Wilson, one that could mirror the long-awaited arrival of X-Force in the MCU. If this takes shape after Avengers: Secret Wars wraps its multiversal madness, it would likely place Deadpool alongside the next generation of mutants as the MCU reshapes itself.
We know Reynolds and Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman are already expected to appear in next December’s Avengers: Doomsday, setting the stage for more crossover chaos. Considering how smoothly Levy and Reynolds collaborate, it feels like a safe assumption they’ll reunite again when the time comes.
There’s no script yet and no official announcement, but the fact that Levy is actively thinking about where to take Wade next is a great sign for fans.
Whenever Deadpool 4 does become real, it sounds like Levy wants to make sure it’s worth the wait.
