Review: DEMON DAYS: X-MEN #1 is Extremely Fun to Read
Demon Days: X-Men #1 from Peach Momoko has officially released. This is a comic that I’ve been very excited about since I learned about it a few weeks ago. The comic completely reimagines the Marvel universe and sets everything in Japan. It’s so fun and the art is gorgeous. Marvel Comics was kind enough to give me a copy to review and I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to see where the story goes in June with Demon Days: Mariko #1. You can grab your copy from local comic shops or your favorite retailers including comiXology (affiliate link).
From STORMBREAKER PEACH MOMOKO comes a Marvel story unlike any you’ve ever seen before! A wandering swordswoman with a psychic blade arrives at village that’s being targeted by demons. One demon is black and white with a terrifying red tongue and another may be the strongest demon there is! In the stunning kick-off issue of this prestige quarterly story, you’ll see a revolutionary reimagination of the Marvel Universe that could only come from Peach Momoko. Ready your katana and enter a mysterious world of demons, monsters, mutants, and magic! Book ONE of FIVE of the DEMON DAYS saga!
I loved this comic. The art is very stylized and I absolutely love it. As promised, the characters are vastly different from their normal versions. Also, the story is fun. We meet the wandering purple-haired swordswoman named Sai who travels with her dog (wolf?) named Logan with hair that resembles the famous X-Men member. She finds a village that is having problems with oni and Orochi who is also called Venom by the villagers. In order to help save them, we also meet an interesting jushi named Juju who reminds me a lot of another X-Men character and a red oni named Hulkmaru. I love everything about this reimagining.
The comic is only 34 pages, but I felt like I got a great story in it. The characters don’t seem too crazy or react in weird ways. They all seem plausible to some degree. Another great part is the last couple of pages provide some information on some of the myths and legends covered such as the Red Oni and Orochi. This is just a very nice addition, especially for someone who hasn’t grown with them.
I would highly recommend reading Demon Days: X-Men #1. It’s fantastic in every way. Did you find any other cameos that I didn’t point out?
