Denis Villeneuve Confirms DUNE: MESSIAH Will Be His Last, but He's Excited to Return: "After That, It Would Become Unhealthy"
Denis Villeneuve is gearing up to return to Arrakis for Dune: Messiah, the third and final chapter in his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic. But the director has made it clear: this will be his last journey into the dunes of Arrakis.
While speaking with The Wrap, Villeneuve reflected on the completion of Dune: Part Two and his decision to move forward with Messiah, Saying:
“When I saw Part Two finished, finally, I realized that that was it. I'd done it. I'd done an adaptation of Dune. And that is something that is an incredible privilege.”
While Villeneuve initially expected to take a break from the franchise after wrapping Part Two, he couldn’t help but be pulled back in.
He explained: “I thought that I would want to go write a few films or do a couple of things before going back to Dune: Messiah. But the images that kept coming back to my mind, the appetite is absolutely intact. That’s the biggest surprise. I still want to go back to Arrakis.”
Villeneuve went on to emphasize that Dune: Messiah will mark the end of his Dune journey, confirming: “Yes. After that, it would become unhealthy.”
This isn’t the first time Villeneuve has indicated he’ll bow out after Dune 3. Last year, he mentioned the possibility of passing the torch to other filmmakers.
He said: “I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books.
“They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a bit more tricky to adapt, but I’m not closing the door. I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.”
It was previously reported that Warner Bros. is planning to move forward with at least one more movie, with or without director Villeneuve, and it seems like it’s going to be without.
Villeneuve has done such a great job with this franchise, so it will be interesting to see another filmmaker attempt to continue what he started.
Dune: Messiah is set to release on December 18, 2026.
