Denis Villeneuve Is Looking to Shoot DUNE PART II in Fall of 2022, Saying "We Still Have a Lot of Work to Do"
For the most part, audiences have been enjoying director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune. It’s a pretty spectacular and epic film. Last week it was announced that Legendary Pictures officially greenlit Dune Part II. The question is, how long are we going to have to wait for it to get made?
Well, according to the director, there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done before they start shooting, so he thinks it’ll be a year before they are able to get the film into production. He’s anticipating to start shooting in fall of 2022. When asked about the sequel announcement in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director said:
“It’s fantastic news, but it’s also kind of a burden. The good news is that a lot of the work has been done already regarding design, casting, locations and writing. So we’re not starting from scratch. It’s not a long period of time, but I will try to face that challenge because it’s important for me that the audience sees Part Two as soon as possible. It’s not a sequel where it’s another episode or another story with the same characters. It actually has direct continuity to the first movie. It’s the second part of the big, huge movie that I’m trying to do. So the sooner the better.”
The director revealed that the designs, casting, and writing is already done, so as of right now the main thing that they need to work on is putting everything together and coordinating from a production standpoint to start filming. When asked if the film would be ready to start shooting in spring, he said:
“No, that’s too soon. We still have a lot of work to do. It’d probably be more toward fall, and even that would be fast.”
Luckily, the foundation of Dune Part II was already all worked out with the script and casting and everything. Had that not been the case, it might have been another three years before a Dune sequel came along!
